The Blood of Dawnwalker Review

Honest review of The Blood of Dawnwalker: story, combat, 30-day timer mechanic, performance and verdict. OpenCritic 85, from Witcher 3 veterans Rebel Wolves.

The Short Verdict

The Blood of Dawnwalker is the debut RPG from Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by The Witcher 3 developers, published by Bandai Namco and released on September 3, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It sits at 85 on OpenCritic with 92% of critics recommending it — one of the best-reviewed RPGs of the year.

Story and Setting

You play Coen, a young man turned into a Dawnwalker — human by day, vampire by night. Set in the plague-stricken 14th-century valley of Vale Sangora in the Carpathian Mountains, you have 30 days and 30 nights to rescue your family from Brencis, a centuries-old vampire lord and former Roman senator.

Gameplay

The game is a narrative sandbox: there is no fixed main-quest sequence. Time advances only when you make major choices, and quests interweave with real consequences — reviews repeatedly compare the writing quality to The Witcher 3. Combat mixes swordplay, vampiric night powers and rune magic; some critics found the combat simpler than the story deserves, but the choice-driven structure carries the game.

Performance and Tech

Built on Unreal Engine 5 with an open world of roughly 50 km². Final PC requirements are friendlier than early spec sheets suggested (a GTX 1060 runs it at 1080p/30), and console versions run well on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Witcher-caliber writing and quest design; meaningful time-pressure mechanic; day/night dual gameplay; 7 endings
  • Cons: Combat is on the simple side; limited build variety; 20% of content is deliberately missable per run
